No more Mrs Nice Guy

I understand that many people voted no to independence because they were afraid of an unknown future. I can sympathise with that fear – at that time. But to think like that now is counterproductive at best. BREXIT is looming and WM still has no plan of any kind. To me that is ten thousand times scarier than Scottish independence could ever be!

Tories are greedy, cruel and clueless. That is what folk should be scared of. Not the fictional “but what currency will we use” fears.

I don’t advocate negative campaigning. Not at all. However, we do need to stop letting the opposition get away with their negativity. No more Mrs Nice Guy. When they lie we need to call it out – loudly. We need to say ‘Oi, liars! Gonnae no dae that’. We need to stop pussyfooting round the truth ourselves because the Tories really do hate us and we need to show voters that… while pointing the way towards the beauteous paradise that is iScotland. Also, we need to get back to the spirit of indyref when we ALL, individually, campaigned one to one. No more waiting around for the party line. Let’s get this shit done!

Take strength from the past but declare your intention…

I found this video in my FB memories today. The song must have been written in the early 80s but I’m surprised by how incredibly relevant these lyrics are. The final verse especially:

We’ve raised all our banners in poem and in legend
We’ve rested on laurels that turned into thorns
To dwell on past glories at the cost of invention
Is to squander the gifts that our forefathers gave
So take strength from the past but declare your intention
To change this dear land back to Scotland the Brave

I also love the bit about teaching, learning and being willing to change. Wise, relevant and inspiring words. Here they are in full:

The Corries – The Dawning Of The Day

We fished stormy waters when fish were a-plenty
We ploughed the wild heathland till it bloomed like a rose
We built the great ships that sailed all the oceans
We toiled underground, nature’s treasures exposed
We’ve travelled the world, we’ve known kings, we’ve known princes
Discoursed with scholars, reasoned with fools
O we’ve served with distinction all down through the ages
But still in our homeland the foreigner rules

O we’ll fight for what is right and the dawning o the day
When we’ll rise again to win our claim for Scottish destiny

We’re fierce as the badger when danger is threat’ning
We’ve the cunning and the guile that the fox calls his own
We’re the reason that guides our great streams in their coursing
We’re as stubborn as the headland that stands all alone
We can laugh with the devil, no one can laugh louder
Weep with the willow when our heart’s sorely pressed
We’re as gentle and prickly as our own downy thistle
We can work with the hardest and play with the best

O we’ll fight for what is right and the dawning o the day
When we’ll rise again to win our claim for Scottish destiny
But our land it is owned by the faceless investor
Our fish and our farming no longer our own
Our industry’s ruined, our assets are squandered
Our souls are in hock and our children in pawn
It’s no use in thinking it’s too late for changing
No use in thinking that it’s not up to you
You can teach, you can learn and to change things be willing
For you are your country and your country is you

O we’ll fight for what is right and the dawning o the day
When we’ll rise again to win our claim for Scottish destiny

Too long have we blamed the foreign oppressor
Too long have we hoped for our hero’s return
We’ve raised all our banners in poem and in legend
We’ve rested on laurels that turned into thorns
To dwell on past glories at the cost of invention
Is to squander the gifts that our forefathers gave
So take strength from the past but declare your intention
To change this dear land back to Scotland the Brave

O we’ll fight for what is right and the dawning o the day
When we’ll rise again to win our claim for Scottish destiny

O Caledonia
We are your sons
And will again be free

Use your words!

I’m not a nationalist. I’m a member of the Scottish NATIONAL Party – the party of the nation of Scotland. Nobody claims any nefarious meaning behind the names National Library of Scotland or National Health Service. Why the SNP? I’m not going to accept being called a nationalist anymore. I’m ambivalent about ‘Nat’ but if they want a shorter term I’ll say “Call me a ‘Scot'”

I’m a member of the Scottish National Party and I seek independence and self determination for my country. Independence – not separatism. Like saying “political correctness” instead of “treating people with respect” we’re allowing the opposition to control the language, to dictate the message. We need to stop that. We need to argue more, point out the lies and the weasely words. We need to stop being so damn nice.

I’m a big fan of sarcasm.

And we need to talk about brexit – a really lot! Because brexit is going to be a great, steaming disaster and it scares the hell out of me. When they whine “we don’t want a second referendum” I say “Too late! We had one in 2016 and now everything has gone to shit. What are you going to do about that?”.

I don’t know where this came from. I think I must have seen one arsehole comment too many. But, the thing is, language is SO important and they are too good at using it against us.

Backing Scotland’s Currency – Foreign Exchange Reserves for an independent Scotland

A NEW report by Common Weal has detailed how the stability of a Scottish currency can be achieved through the holding of foreign currency reserves.

The report is the third by Common Weal on the case for a Scottish currency as part of its White Paper Project, which is building a new case for an independent Scottish state. The report is written by Peter Ryan, an IT expert in the financial sector with over 25 years’ experience.

A better nation

Exactly one year after “winning” the Brexit Referendum the Tories in Westminster still have no strategy. Horrifyingly, not only do they lack a Plan B, they never even bothered to formulate Plan A! From this staggeringly weak position, over the coming months Tories will attempt to negotiate the UK’s exit from the European Union. Do you trust them with your future?

At the end of the negotiation period (once the full scale of the Tory fiasco becomes clear) the First Minister has proposed Scotland votes on whether to accept the UK’s brexit future or to leave the UK and choose our own way.

I’ll be voting for a better nation.

Greek referendum

Greece has voted όχι to austerity!

I’ve seen folk on twitter all doom and gloom and “they’ll regret it tomorrow” but the Greek people are already in shit and can’t really get much deeper. Their thinking is: it’s already bad, it might stay bad for a while but eventually things will get better – on our terms.

I applaud that.

They may need to leave the Euro. They don’t seem bothered by that. They may default on the massive debts european banks gave them despite the knowledge they’d be unable to repay. So what? What are the bankers going to do? Repossess the Parthenon? Remortgage the Peloponnese?

It was a tough choice but they were placed, through the machinations of others, in an impossible position. I applaud the Greek people for the decision they made today.

Lies, damned lies and unionists

The internet seems terribly concerned today that ‘The Vow’ has been betrayed. I’m finding those posts increasingly irritating.

First, they’d already started betraying that vow on the 19th of September 2014 – remember that? Why the surprised outrage today?

Second, and most importantly, so fricken what if they betray their vow?!? It was a stupid wee note, cobbled together and published in an absolute rag of a paper. It is, and always was, valueless.

What matters, what makes me sick and furious, is that they’re really betraying the proposals put forward by the Smith Commission. The Smith Commission – a publicly funded, cross party group – produced a report which David Cameron pledged to implement in full! He voiced that pledge as recently as 1 month ago!

Now, as the Scotland Bill is debated, Smith’s proposals are being chucked out left and right. Yesterday, they finally voted down the most important and vital point in the whole Report. As proposed in Article 21:

UK legislation will state that the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government are permanent institutions

Exactly 1 month after their leader said “Let’s make sure Smith is implemented in full…” the dear old Tory Party voted against the most valuable of Smith’s proposals! Och, well. Maybe we’ll still get to make our own roadsigns… maybe.
